The Upper Saranac Foundation (USF) is urging area residents to share information about aquatic invasive species (AIS) prevention with their friends and guests this summer. As welcoming residents, together we can encourage visitors to arrive invasive free.
While we understand most of the Upper Saranac Lake homeowners’ boats never leave the lake and are not a threat of transporting invasive species, that is not always the case for our visiting guests. To support this effort, the USF, in collaboration with the Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program, is providing electronic and printed versions of Protect Your Waters From AIS for you to share.
Watercraft owners should be made aware that New York State law requires boaters operating motorized watercraft inside the Adirondack Park to carry a certificate confirming their motorboat is free of harmful aquatic invasive species. Motorboat operators can receive a watercraft inspection certificate from an Adirondack Watershed Steward by accepting a free boat inspection or decontamination.
Starting on Memorial Day, numerous Adirondack Watershed Steward Inspection and Decontamination Stations are strategically placed and will be open throughout the Adirondacks. Locations and hours can be found at adkcleanboats.com.
Together we can emphasize the importance of protecting our water resources and to encourage watercraft users to meet the CLEANED, DRAINED AND DRIED standard of protection. More information about watercraft certifications and regulations can be found here. Let’s celebrate our love for our lake this summer by standing up for water quality and protecting this treasure for future generations. With your support, we can continue safeguarding our precious resources.
Printed hardcopies of Protect Your Waters from AIS are available for you to share: email lakemanager@usfoundation.net to request yours today.
