The Upper Saranac Foundation (USF), in collaboration with the Lake Champlain-Lake George Regional Planning Board, have developed a septic system educational awareness campaign for homeowners and visitors of the Upper Saranac watershed. Now available are two versions of mailers, one for residents and the other for short-term rental owners. The homeowner version has already been mailed to over 850 residents. Both versions of the mailers can be downloaded here: homeowner version, short-term rental version, or by requesting the flyers by emailing lakemanager@usfoundayion.net.
The mailers included tips on how to care for your system to help protect water quality. The tips can be summed up as:
- Think at the Sink! Learn what not to put down your kitchen sink, such as fats, oils, or greases.
- Don’t Strain Your Drain! Learn about the importance of using water efficiently, and staggering water use of water-based appliances.
- Shield Your Field! Learn about your septic system’s drainfield, including how it works, and tips to take care of it.
- Don’t Overload the Commode! Learn about what can be flushed down the toilet and what should be thrown in the trash.
- Pump Your Tank! Learn about a typical septic tank pump-out service, and how a septic tank works.
