The Upper Saranac Foundation (USF) is pleased to announce the release of the State of the Lake Report, a comprehensive, science-based assessment of the water quality and ecological health of Upper Saranac Lake. This report represents years of data collection, analysis, and collaboration with the Adirondack Watershed Institute (AWI) and provides an important benchmark for understanding long-term trends in the lake and watershed.
State of the Lake reports are intentionally produced at multi-year intervals, allowing us to evaluate meaningful trends rather than short-term fluctuations. The previous report, published in 2018, summarized data through 2017. This new report builds on that foundation, incorporating more recent monitoring data and reflecting how decades of stewardship, investment, and adaptive management have shaped lake conditions today.
Key Takeaways from the Report
- Water quality has shown long-term improvement and stability. Total phosphorus and chlorophyll-a concentrations have declined significantly from peak levels observed in past decades.
- Continued vigilance is essential. While overall conditions are good, Upper Saranac Lake remains vulnerable to emerging and persistent stressors, including road salt inputs, climate-driven changes in storm intensity, and localized nutrient loading. These pressures highlight the importance of maintaining monitoring and preventative management.
- Past investments are paying dividends. Improvements documented in the report reflect decades of coordinated efforts—ranging from watershed protection and infrastructure improvements to education and invasive species management—demonstrating that long-term, science-guided action can successfully protect lake ecosystems.
- Adaptive management remains the path forward. The report emphasizes the need to continue proactive strategies that focus on early detection, targeted response, and maintaining best practices, rather than waiting for conditions to deteriorate before acting.
Why This Report Matters
The State of the Lake Report serves as both a snapshot of current conditions and a roadmap for future decision-making. It provides a credible, data-driven foundation to guide policy discussions, inform land-use planning, support grant funding, and strengthen community understanding of the factors that influence lake health.
Experience from other Adirondack lakes shows that when management and monitoring efforts are reduced, hard-won gains can quickly be lost. This report reinforces a clear message: Upper Saranac Lake’s health today is the result of sustained commitment—and protecting it into the future will require the same level of dedication.
