The Upper Saranac Foundation (USF) has released its 2025 Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Management Report for Follensby Clear Pond, highlighting measurable progress in the control of Eurasian watermilfoil (EWM).
Five years of sustained, science-based management have resulted in dramatic reductions in infestation size, density, biomass, and plant counts. Most notably, independent post-management surveys conducted in October 2025 detected no remaining EWM within the entire 495 acre pond —marking a significant milestone in the Foundation’s long-term restoration strategy. Since the initiation of AIS management, USF divers have removed 17,415 pounds (8.7 tons) of Eurasian watermilfoil.
Equally important, the project has reduced the risk of downstream spread to interconnected waters, including Upper Saranac Lake and nearby uninfected ponds. Given the high recreational use and hydrologic connectivity of this headwater system, continued vigilance remains essential. Early detection, rapid response, and consistent seasonal monitoring will be critical to preventing reinfestation and protecting surrounding waterbodies.
These outcomes demonstrate the effectiveness of consistent monitoring, adaptive management, and early-season intervention. The progress achieved at Follensby Clear Pond reflects a disciplined, data-driven approach designed to move from large-scale control toward long-term suppression and potential eradication.
