In October, a home heating oil spill occurred in the Saranac Inn area. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) responded to the 248-gallon spill and is in the process of cleaning it up.
The Upper Saranac Foundation (USF) is working with NYSDEC to protect ground and surface water quality and is coordinating communication with area residents regarding the spill. NYSDEC’s goal, working with contractors, is to have the spill site remediated to prior conditions within realistic and practical margins.
Republic Services, which performs duties related to contaminations and clean-up of hazardous materials, is delineating the spill with groundwater borings and monitoring points and wells. Fortunately, test borings have found no indication of oil outside the footprint of the basement where the spill occurred.
Republic Services has begun recovering products from wells drilled through the basement floor. NYSDEC assures the USF that all appropriate corrective actions are being taken to protect human health and the environment.
The Adirondack Explorer online publication inaccurately reported the spill involved 2,500-gallons. It was actually 248-gallons. https://mailchi.mp/bab0bef09db6/adirondack-report-395821?e=[UNIQID]
