If you weren’t able to attend, our partner organization, the Adirondack Lakes Alliance recently hosted an informative and timely webinar:
Wake Sports in the Adirondacks: The Hidden Impacts & Dangers to Our Ecosystems
As wake surfing and wake boarding continue to grow in popularity, so do concerns about their impacts on Adirondack lakes. The specialized boats used for wake sports generate powerful waves designed for recreation—but those same waves can pose significant challenges for lake stewards, shoreline property owners, and communities working to protect fragile ecosystems.
The webinar explored:
- What defines a “wake boat”
- The environmental impacts associated with wake boat use
- Proposed remedies and regulatory approaches
- A path forward for Adirondack municipalities
Featured presenters included:
- Scott Ireland, Executive Director of the Adirondack Lakes Alliance, who provided context on the rapid growth of wake sports in the Park and outlined proposed lake-specific restrictions, along with the importance of community education and responsible use.
- Laura Dlugolecki of the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation, who shared insights from Vermont’s 2024 wake boat operation restrictions and discussed how collaboration with the wake boat community contributed to a successful rollout.
