
Fireworks are a cherished tradition on Upper Saranac Lake (USL) but may have hidden environmental impacts. A recent study by the Upper Saranac Foundation (USF), in partnership with the University of Nevada, examined how fireworks contribute to perchlorate levels in the lake.
What is Perchlorate?
Perchlorate is a man-made chemical found in fireworks, explosives, and rocket fuel. It dissolves in water and can interfere with iodine uptake in the thyroid, potentially affecting hormone production and metabolism. Drinking water is a primary exposure pathway.
Why It Matters
Many USL shore residents rely on lake water. In 2024, the USF collected water samples before, immediately after, and one week following the annual fireworks displays. Results from Upper Saranac Lake showed a notable increase in perchlorate:
- Before Fireworks (June 28): 0.050 ppb
- 1 Day After (July 5): 0.421 ppb
- 1 Week Later (July 12): 0.118 ppb
Perchlorate levels surged immediately after the fireworks and gradually declined over the following week, suggesting natural mixing and reduction, though they remained above baseline levels. These levels remained well below the EPA’s interim health advisory level of 15 ppb, but the spike—over eight times the baseline—highlights the temporary impact of fireworks on local water quality.
This study was part of a broader nationwide initiative involving lakes across the U.S., many of which observed similar short-term increases.
Although perchlorate levels in USL declined within a week, repeated annual displays could result in cumulative impacts over time. This research underscores the importance of understanding the environmental effects of fireworks. The USF remains committed to science-based monitoring and community education to help protect the Upper Saranac watershed.
