After five years of planning, grant writing, and fundraising, work has begun on the Bartlett Carry Dam. The USF thanks all who’ve helped us get this far.
The project began in 2018 when the USF initiated an engineering review after a sinkhole appeared during a high-water incident. The intent was to be proactive in studying the dam to avoid a scenario where only reactive repairs were made; such patchwork repairs would end up being more expensive than tackling a full restoration. The primary goal of this project is to secure the dam’s future, preserve and protect USL, and ensure that all safety and regulatory requirements are met.
Preparations to date include hiring an engineer, performing tests and analysis, surveying, engineering assessments, enhancing site access, and hiring a contractor, among other steps. The first phase of the repairs began with tree removal on the south side of the dam, providing access for reconstruction of the secondary, downstream spillway. The dam renovation is scheduled to continue into next summer and is anticipated to conclude by fall 2024. This work will have little to no impact on those residing in the watershed.
