Halloween on Upper Saranac Lake took a terrifying twist…
It was a dark and misty Halloween night on Upper Saranac Lake. The moonlight shimmered across still waters, and a haunting fog rolled through the bays. Campers told ghost stories by their fires, unaware that beneath the calm surface, a far more chilling tale was unfolding…
From the depths rose the ghastly HABs—Harmful Algal Blooms—glowing green like toxic ghosts. With a hiss and a bubble, they whispered, “We’ll smother your fish, and turn your favorite swimming spot into slime…”
Not far behind slithered the dreaded Milfoil, the invasive “Creepers of the Deep,” tangling their tendrils around docks and propellers. “Were here to clog your waterways…. they sneered”
From the murky shadows emerged Septic Sam, the leaky-tank terror, oozing through the soil and cackling, “Out of sight, out of mind… until it’s too late!”
And along the shore crept Runoff Rita, the stormwater specter, carrying with her a toxic brew of fertilizers, oil, and sediment. “You thought only what’s in the lake mattered?” she hissed. “I bring the trouble straight from your yard!”
Just when it seemed the lake was lost to its villains, the fearless defenders of the Upper Saranac Foundation arrived—armed not with garlic or silver bullets, but with data, divers, and decades of stewardship. Through science-based management, community partnerships, and good old-fashioned elbow grease, they banished the monsters back into the depths once more.
But as dawn broke over the glassy water, a warning echoed across the lake: these threats never vanish for good—they only wait for us to drop our guard.
So, this Halloween, help keep these lake monsters at bay by following Lake Friendly Living practices and supporting the Upper Saranac Foundation. Together, we can ensure the Upper Saranac watershed remains a place of natural beauty—not the setting for the next environmental horror story.
